Activity: Review a Demographic Section
Time: About 15 minutes.
The Lesson 2 Worksheet contains a draft demographic section written for the sample center (65 licensed spaces; one room each for infants, toddlers, twos, preschool, and pre-K; about 35% of families receive CCS).
- Read each of the six draft questions.
- Apply the purpose test to each one and mark it Keep, Change, or Drop.
- Write a one-line reason for each decision, and rewrite any question you marked Change.
- Compare your answers with the table below.
Compare your answers
| Draft question | Decision | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Which classroom is your child in? | Change | Replace classrooms with age bands (Infant & Toddler / Twos & Preschool / Pre-K) and allow more than one selection. With one room per age group, classroom answers can identify families and teachers. |
| 2. Does your family receive a Child Care Scholarship? | Change | Keep only if a difference would change something, such as how billing is explained. Make it optional, add “Prefer not to say,” and state why you are asking. |
| 3. How many children do you have enrolled? | Drop | No decision depends on it, and combined with other questions it narrows the pool. |
| 4. How long has your family been enrolled? | Change or drop | Useful only if you plan to compare new and long-term families. If kept, use two ranges: less than 1 year, 1 year or more. |
| 5. What is your household income? | Drop | No decision at this center depends on it, and it is the most sensitive question on the list. |
| 6. What language is spoken most often in your home? | Keep | Directly informs which languages to translate materials into. Make it optional. |
