Family surveys and Maryland EXCELS

Maryland EXCELS does not require child care centers to conduct a family survey. A survey can still support two EXCELS standards:

  • ADM 5: Family Engagement. Programs document different types of opportunities for families to be engaged in the program: at least two types at Level 2, rising to at least five types at Level 5. A family survey may be one of those types. Confirm with your Program Coordinator or Quality Assurance Specialist how your survey will be credited.
  • ACR 3: Program Improvement Plan. At Level 3 and above, your continuous quality improvement process is informed by assessments, school readiness goals, and other program priorities. Survey results can shape those priorities, so survey-driven actions can go into the plan you already maintain instead of a separate list. Lesson 7 shows how.
