Match the question type to what you need
Learning objective: Write survey questions that are clear, unbiased, accessible, and tied to decisions the program can make.
| Question type | Best for | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Rating scale | Measuring how families feel, and tracking it over time | “I receive enough information about my child’s day.” Strongly agree to Strongly disagree |
| Multiple choice | Sorting families into options | “What time do you usually pick up your child?” |
| Yes/No | Confirming a fact | “Have you used the family app in the past month?” |
| Open-ended | Explaining why, or surfacing issues you didn’t anticipate | “What is one thing we could improve?” |
Most of your survey should be rating-scale questions. They are quick to answer, easy to summarize, and comparable from one survey to the next.
