Reading open-ended comments

  1. Read every comment before drawing conclusions.
  2. Sort comments into themes, such as communication, pickup, meals, or tuition.
  3. Count how many comments fall into each theme. A theme raised by six families carries more weight than a single comment, however strongly worded.
  4. Note one or two comments that capture each theme in families’ own words, without identifying details.
  5. Connect themes to the rating questions. Comments often explain why a rating is low.
