Major Federal Employment Laws

Six major federal laws form the backbone of workplace protection for employees across the country:

  • Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964
  • Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA)
  • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
  • Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)
  • Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)
  • Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA)

Each law protects a different aspect of the employment relationship, and each has its own applicability threshold — which matters for centers determining whether a given law applies to them.
