Why Staffing is a Strategic Decision
Staffing is usually the single largest expense in a child care budget. It is also one of the few costs you have real, day-to-day control over. Every classroom operates on two numbers: how many children are enrolled and present, and how many staff are scheduled to be there. The relationship between those two numbers is your ratio, and your ratio drives nearly everything else about your personnel costs — how many hours you schedule, how much you spend on coverage, and how many people you need on payroll at any given moment.
Because enrollment and attendance shift throughout the day — drop-off waves, nap time, late pickups — a ratio that looks right on a staffing schedule can look very different by 2:00 in the afternoon. Tracking staffing levels the way this course teaches gives you a factual picture of what is actually happening in your classrooms, rather than what your schedule assumes is happening.
